Choosing the right camera set upFor high impact sports like dirt bike riding you need to be recording onto a solid state recorder as apposed to a hard drive recorder which has a spinning disk that gets messed up buy the vibrations. So what you need is a camera system that records onto an SD card. Obviously the smaller the camera; the better. There are a number of solutions for this. The PV-500 recording unit is small enough to fit into a cigarette box so can be strapped easily under the seat out of the way. The cameras can go as small as a lipstick and can be mounted anywhere from your helmet to the frame of your bike.

Mounting the cameras for the best anglesFor the most stable images the best place to mount the camera is on the helmet because your neck stabilises the head. Picking up your own point-of-view is also brilliant so that your friends can see exactly what you see after the ride. For more creative and effective shots there are a number of mounting solutions available so that you can mount the camera almost anywhere on the bike using suction mounts or jubilee clips onto the forks. Our top five mount positions are: · Behind the boot to pick up gear changes and a low angle · On the handlebar looking back at the riders face (can also pick up the reflection of the racetrack ahead off the helmet visor!!) · On the helmet catching the riders point-of-view · On the frame looking onto the shocks and track ahead · Looking onto the speed dials and track ahead

Uploading and editing footageSome of the cameras come with their own software packages and all the others are Windows compatible so simply connect the recording unit to the computer and it will be recognised. The cables for doing this are supplied with all the cameras. The other way to do this is simply to take the SD card from the recording device and stick this into your laptop. Some digital cameras can also read the video files from the cameras. Editing can be done on the generic softwares available. One of the cameras, the POV.1 comes with it’s own software editing package which will allow you to edit, compose and up-load footage in minutes.
Dirt Bike Rider website and other internet sites are great for showing the footage off to the world and the entry level cameras such as the ATC2K, the Helmet Hero, or the Motorsports Hero (as cheap as £89.99) are great for capturing footage for this.
