Weekend Wrap!

Published: 27th July 2009

With no GPs going off over the weekend we’re all about domestic action this week but don’t stress because we’re not talking about ironing and stuff like that! That’s because we’ve got bar-banging national championship races from two of the world’s favourite motocross circuits – that’s Foxhill and Washougal – to report on so if you wanna know who did what read on…

Starting at Foxhill consistency wins the day in MX1 for PAR Honda’s Brad Anderson who steers his CRF450 to a pair of second place finishes to take a well deserved overall win. Race wins on the day are shared by Kawasaki Racing Team’s Gareth Swanepoel – who leads every lap in the opening gambit to take his fourth moto win of the series – and MVR-D Suzuki’s Carl Nunn who outsmarts the competition during a five-man fight of attrition second time out. It’s these three riders who share the podium with Ando on the top step, Nunn second and a disappointed Swanepoel third.

After a slowish start to the season Stephen Sword just keeps on getting faster and faster and with Foxhill being one of his favourite circuits it seems likely that a Swordy win is on the cards – especially when he decimates the field in qualification to take pole. Moto one is all about the Swindon-based Scotsman too after he moves from fourth to first on lap one while Red Bull KTM UK team-mate Reverend Jake Nicholls hangs in as best he can. Pascal Leuret claims a distant third ahead of Neville Bradshaw and Hawkstone Park moto winner Martin Barr.

The second moto seems to be a carbon copy of the first as Sword once again takes control with Nicholls chasing hard but in a bizarre twist of fate it’s Nicholls who appears from the back of the circuit in the lead as Sword’s machine grinds to a halt when a rock breaks the KTM’s rear sprocket and derails his chain. Having suffered a similar fate at Hawkstone Park which too cost him the moto win, Nicholls needs no second invitation and grasps victory with both hands. Leuret was second this time while MX2 class returnee Zach Osborne claims a fine third.

Josh Waterman wraps up the MXY2 crown in fine style, taking the overall win on the day with a 3-1 scorecard. Finishing second overall on the day and in the championship is PAR Honda’s Luke Hawkins who has matched Waterman result for result all year long except for at the round that he missed all together.

Over in America Ryan Dungey wins the Washougal MX National to take the lead in the 250 class of the championship after eight rounds. Dungey trades wins with Christophe Pourcel on the day but his 1-5 scorecard seriously outscores the Frenchman’s 8-1. Blake Wharton finish second overall with a 3-3 while the surprisingly consistent Britpack of Tommy Searle and Max Anstie take sixth and ninth overall with Tommy running 6-6 and Max 9-9.

In the 450 class Chad Reed proves he’s the daddy outdoors by running 1-1 on his Makita Suzuki. The Yamahas of Josh Grant and Jason Lawrence round out the podium while GP star Clement Desalle finishes 10th overall after running 3-DNF on a borrowed 450 Honda. In the series standings Reed now sits on a 65 point lead ahead of Grant while Andrew Short and Ivan Tedesco sit in joint third place with just four rounds remaining.
