Weekend Wrap

It’s all been happening indoors this weekend as round three of both the AMA and British SX championships take place at Anaheim and Liverpool…

Heading into Anaheim 2 the man on form is Ryan Dungey whose 2-1 card from the opening two rounds sees him leading the series from Ryan Villopoto and Josh Hill. Round one winner James Stewart injured his right wrist last weekend in Phoenix as he struggled to 15th and at one point looked doubtful to roll out for the Main Event – but the defending champ is one tough cookie and takes his place on the startgate.

Austin Stroupe grabs the holeshot but Stewart’s quickly into the lead and his team-mate Hill wastes little time moving into second as Dungey starts seventh and immediately begins to carve his way up the leaderboard.

At the end of lap six Hill passes Stewart for the lead but both San Manuel Yamaha riders fall victim to the Rockstar Makita Suzuki of Dungey who takes the chequered flag to extend his lead.

“I had my work cut out for me tonight.” Admits Dungey. “But I just had to be patient. I had the speed and I had the lines – it was just a matter of letting it come and not rushing it.”

Down in the Lites division Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer makes it three-from-three, leading all 15 laps after moving past team-mate Josh Hansen. Will Hahn takes second with Trey Canard taking the last place on the podium with a late pass on Hansen.

Brit abroad Tommy Searle fails to break the top 10 but Max Anstie keeps the momentum up in his rookie supercross season with a battling seventh place.

Meanwhile, back in Blighty at Liverpool’s Echo Arena the third round of the Future West SX series goes off in fine style. 2004 FIM world champ Heath Voss takes a solid start-to-finish victory in the SX1 class Main Event on a borrowed PAR Honda ahead of SX1 and SX2 double series leader Colton Facciotti and Suzuki’s Steven Clarke.

Steven Clarke makes a welcome return to the UK (Sutty)

Scuba Steve, the AMA national #43 rider, is making a welcome return to UK shores and after finishing third in SX1 and second in the SX2 class – behind Facciotti once more – wins the British Open final on his super-speedy MVR-D Suzuki. Frighteningly fast and aggressive all night long, the wavy-locked wonder is a favourite of the Liverpool crowd thanks to his full-throttle, bar-banging antics. Runner-up in the homeboy class is series leader Gordon Crockard who extends his series lead to 14 points – ahead of Danny Tollet – with just one round remaining.

Tickets for next Saturday night’s final showdown at London’s O2 Arena are on sale online right now at www.theo2.co.uk/event/supercross-2010-20100130.html. Be there or be square!
